First 5 LA partners with a wide range of organizations to gather data and conduct research on children prenatal through age 5 and their families. This is part of our commitment to ongoing learning and improvement and to improve the quality of data about children 0-5 available in L.A. County.

Census Data Mining Project
As First 5 LA embarks on a place-based funding approach, it is important to know and understand who lives in the 14 Best Start communities both for programmatic decisions, as well as research purposes. First 5 LA's Demographic Migration Study will give a detailed description of the residents of the 14 Best Start communities and how families move in and out of these communities. Read more »

Ensuring that children are born healthy is one of the four priority goal areas at the heart of First 5 LA's 2009-2015 Strategic Plan. Healthy City
Healthy City (www.healthycity.org) is an online resource that unites community voices, rigorous research and innovative technologies by combining the power of information, mapping and collaboration into a platform that lets individuals work together to identify common goals. Los Angeles County Health Survey
The Los Angeles County Health Survey is a telephone survey used to collect data on the health of L.A. County residents. The LACHS primarily gathers information about access to health care, health care utilization, health behaviors, health status and knowledge and perceptions of health-related issues among the L.A. Los Angeles Mommy and Baby (LAMB) Survey
The Los Angeles Mommy and Baby Survey is a mail-in survey used to collect data on mothers and children in L.A. County. The survey is designed to obtain data on mothers who recently delivered a baby and enquires about events that happened before, during and after their pregnancy. Its main objectives are to better understand the causes of poor birth outcomes in L.A. County, identify areas where help and resources are needed the most and improve the health and human services of future mothers and babies in the County. Read more »

Public Health Foundations-WIC Data Mining Project and Participant Survey
In our effort to aggregate critical data about low-income families with children 5 and younger in L.A. County, First 5 LA has partnered with PHFE-WIC, the largest provider of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children in L.A. County, to create the Data Mining Project. Through collaborations with the six other local WIC agencies and the California state WIC Branch, the project gathers birth outcome, overweight and other administrative data that is routinely collected on every WIC participant in a centralized database. These data are used by WIC and other agencies, including First 5 LA, to better understand low-income populations. Read more »

Research Advisory Committee
The primary role of the Research Advisory Committee is to provide technical input, guidance and advice to First 5 LA on early childhood research relevant to L.A. County and our Strategic Plan. Members are locally and nationally recognized researchers who have varied expertise in methodology and content areas, such as children's health and safety and early childhood education. First 5 LA draws upon the vast experience and expertise of the RAC members to provide advice and input that will allow our staff to make the most informed research and evaluation decisions possible. Southern California Association for Learning and Results (SCALAR)
The Southern California Association for Learning and Results is a regional association of the Southern California First 5 county commissions. SCALAR has evaluation, communication and executive director workgroups. The goal of the association is to find ways to combine data and coordinate activities to increase the effectiveness of the participating First 5 commissions, particularly around research and messaging.
