State leaders are gearing up for another lengthy budget battle. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is expected to fire the opening salvo this Friday, May 14 when he releases his May Revise budget, which could potentially include more bad news for California's young children.

According to a recent Los Angeles Times article, state tax collections for the month of April lagged behind fiscal projections by as much as 30 percent - roughly $3 billion. The loss of expected revenue could result in the governor proposing even deeper cuts to government services.

Earlier this year, state legislators adopted a set of mid-year budget solutions that bypassed potential cuts to many children's programs such as Healthy Families and CalWORKs child care services. The governor's proposed grab of First 5 funding was also not included in the budget solutions, after dozens of concerned parents and children's advocates spoke about the importance of First 5 funding to local communities at budget hearings earlier this year

Recently, Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez initiated a series of forums throughout California to get feedback from community members on how best to balance the state budget. Forum attendees in Palm Springs, Orange County and Los Angeles took part in activities that identified budget priorities and revenue solutions. Additional forums will be held in San Diego and Albany. More information, as well as video recordings of past forums, is available online here.
