Program Funding: School Readiness, Healthy Kids, Family Literacy
 
The medical center provides comprehensive hospital services for people of all ages in Los Angeles County. The hospital is also authorized to enroll children in low-cost health insurance programs through the Healthy Kids program; it also provides family preservation and anger management through it's Pico Union Family Preservation Program; child care and school readiness through its Hope St. location; perinatal health care at the Womens Heath Center location; and sponsors a weight management program for youth and their parents. Services are provided at six locations; see site list for details.

Angelica Child Development and School Readiness Program
The purpose of this grant is to promote the idea of school readiness by creating centers and programs that offer an array of services, including early care and education, health and social services, parenting education and support. The target area is Downtown Los Angeles with a population of nearly 500,000 residents, one-third of whom are under 1 year of age, with 10% four years of age or under.

Within the area, 05% of adults are foreign born and 22% of these are recent immigrants. The major program activities include: Center-based early childhood education for children 0-5 years of age, family case management services, child health assessment screening and services coordination, Transition to kindergarten service.

Hope Street Family Center - Literacy Program
The Hope Street Family Literacy program, a collaborative effort of California Hospital Medical Center and the Los Angeles Unified School District, Adult Education Division, targets low-income children, 0 to 5 years of age, and their parents to: promote participating parents' literacy; help parents to be their children's "first and best teachers" and therefore support the educational growth of their children; and prepare children for success as learners, able to meet challenging academic standards in regular school programs.
