Funding For:
School Readiness and Preparation Project
The purpose of this grant is to promote the idea of school readiness by creating centers and programs that offer an array of services, including early care and education, health and social services, parenting education and support. The ethnic/cultural representation of the Long Beach Reading Readiness and Preparation Project (RRAPP) target population for students who attend the seven target schools include: 68% Hispanic; 14% African-American; 10% Asian, Pacific Islander and Filipino; 2% Caucasian, and 4% Other. Between 89% and 98% of students in the target elementary schools for RRAPP receive free and/or reduced cost school lunches. Unemployment rates are two to six times above the national average in the target zip codes. Major program activities include: a Summer Kindergarten Readiness Program, parent and child Kindergarten readiness classes, parent education, mental health counseling, medical and dental care, case management services, transition-to-Kindergarten activities, cross-training between Kindergarten teachers and community preschool staff, and the development of a parent-centered governance structure.

Adult Literacy and Early Childhood Education Program
Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD) expanded its existing family literacy services at the Adult School site and enhanced these services by providing a quality early learning environment for young children 0-5 years old.
