Summer McBride is a certified parenting instructor, full spectrum doula, and trained facilitator of Centering Pregnancy (group prenatal care) through the Charles Drew University Black Maternal Health Center of Excellence. Summer is also CEO of The Village Legacy, a local nonprofit focused on providing affordable and culturally responsive parenting classes working primarily with families who have court mandated parenting classes to regain or retain custody of their children. She serves as faculty for iDREAM for Racial Health Equity and as a co-chair on the LA County African American Infant and Maternal Mortality Community Action Team (AAIMM CAT). Through the AAIMM CAT, she is editor of The Richardson Review, a quarterly publication featuring birth stories and resources to inform and educate birthing people in an effort to improve birth outcomes.

Summer had the privilege of being a trustee on the Culver City Board of Education for 6 years (2017-2022). During her tenure, she successfully advocated for the district to form an Equity Advisory Council, and in 2020, during her term as Board President, unanimously passed CCUSD’s first-ever Equity Strategic Plan. She currently serves on various committees within Culver City including the Black Parent Affinity Group, the Equity Advisory Task Force, the Environmental Sustainability Food Services subcommittee, the Culver City Police Department Chief’s Advisory Panel, and the Labor Management Partnership. She recently joined the staff in CCUSD as a noon supervisor and serves as a union steward and member of the bargaining team for the Culver City Association of Classified Employees (ACE), an affiliate of the California Teachers Association (CTA).

Summer was appointed by Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Social Services Commission in 2021 and recently joined the First 5 LA Board of Commissioners. She has a BA in Social Psychology from Southern New Hampshire University. Her advocacy and interests converge at the intersection of health and educational equity and justice with an emphasis on whole-person care.
