The recent election outcomes present new opportunities for us to come together and strengthen our collective efforts on behalf of children and families. At First 5 LA, we are optimistic about what we can achieve by deepening our partnerships and focusing on practical solutions. While concerns about potential impacts on early care, civil rights, and safety net programs are understandable, we see this as a moment to build resilience and engage in meaningful work. Together, we can advance policies and build bridges with our partners to ensure every child has the resources they need to thrive.
Despite national uncertainties, there have been encouraging developments at the local level. In LA County, Pomona’s Measure Y will dedicate a portion of its general fund to services like child care and youth programs. Likewise, Sonoma and Santa Cruz counties have approved increased funding for early care and health initiatives. These local wins demonstrate the power of creative solutions in the face of broader funding challenges. However, local efforts alone are not enough. First 5 LA remains committed to advocating for robust state and federal support to expand and sustain these critical investments.
In these uncertain times, we are proud to introduce First 5 LA’s new “Bringing Vision to Action” initiatives, which have been carefully crafted to address the most pressing needs of children and families in Los Angeles County. Informed by robust input from our local communities over this past year, these initiatives serve as a proactive response, helping us navigate today’s challenges while remaining focused on long-term impact. Grounded in the First 5 LA 2024-2029 Strategic Plan, they center on four key areas: prevention, vibrant environments, maternal and child well-being and early care and education.
By focusing on these priorities, we are not only responding to immediate needs but also laying a foundation for sustainable, community-driven solutions. These initiatives are designed to be flexible and resilient, ensuring that as circumstances change, we are well-positioned to continue making a meaningful difference in the lives of our youngest residents and their families.
This is a call to action: now is the time for all of us to come together to ensure every child in Los Angeles County has the opportunity to thrive. We invite you to join us in expanding the table and strengthening our collective efforts. We are at a pivotal moment where we can transform this period of uncertainty into one of hope and progress—but it will take the collective strength of our partners, communities, and supporters. By listening deeply, collaborating intentionally, and building trust, we can address the urgent needs of children today while laying the groundwork for long-term, systemic change. Our new initiatives are a commitment to advocating for children and their families, amplifying community voices, and partnering for collective impact. Together, let’s fulfill our shared vision of a brighter future for all children.
