Though we anticipated this decision, it’s stunning, nonetheless. Today’s Supreme Court decision is a bombshell that upends 50 years of every woman’s constitutional right to make her own reproductive health choices. The consequences of this ruling are far reaching, not just for women but for all who believe in the right to make their own choices – to protect their mental, emotional, and physical health and to determine their own futures. With rising maternal mortality rates, which disproportionately impact women of color and low-income women, our country is already failing to ensure equitable, quality maternal health care, supports and services. The overturning of Roe v. Wade will further put the lives of birthing people at risk during the most critical moments, compounding the already existing inequities in our systems of care for families. While Californians can take solace in state-based protections, we must dedicate ourselves to supporting all women in their ability to ensure abortion services are available and accessible.
