Last night the South El Monte and El Monte Best Start leaders hosted a holiday potluck at Spiritt Family Services in South El Monte. The potluck was an opportunity to bring friends and introduce them to Best Start. Potluck attendees walked out with concrete ideas on how to eat healthier and stay fit during the Holidays.

The theme of the evening, eating healthy for the holidays, featured two speakers. Tristin Pham, representing the LA County Department of Public Health, talked about sugary drinks. Guests were surprised to see how much sugar was in a small drink, leading many to make a commitment to be more conscious about how many calories they’re consuming through liquids.

The second guest, Sandra Suarez, nutritionist and educator, brought simple and effective tips to prevent weight gain during the holidays. Some of the highlights from her presentation included how to plan ahead, and never starving yourself, before holiday parties. She also recommended planning some light exercise or movement after big meals, something families can do together.

“Eating healthy during the Holidays is possible,” said Sandra. “It just takes some planning ahead, but always have fun and enjoy family!”

Best Start South El Monte and El Monte leaders were glad to share a meal together outside of the regular meetings and guests walked away with helpful information, and a new interest in getting involved in their community through Best Start.
